An inquest found that a five-month-old baby girl, Esta High, died from streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis. The jury ruled that the death was contributed to by neglect, citing missed opportunities for testing and treatment due to a focus on a Covid diagnosis.
What happened
- An inquest jury concluded that five-month-old Esta High died of natural causes which was contributed to by neglect.
- The jury found that doctors at Leeds General Infirmary missed opportunities to test for a bacterial infection, specifically streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, despite Esta’s high temperature and vomiting.
- Lynsey Carr, Esta’s mother, stated that her concerns were repeatedly ignored and that hospital staff were more focused on isolating her daughter due to the Covid risk than listening to her parents.
- The family was placed in a side room at the hospital’s children’s assessment and treatment (CAT) unit, and Carr described this time as ‘15 hours that were filled with missed opportunities.’
- Esta’s condition deteriorated, and scans revealed meningoencephalitis and streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Despite attempts to save her life in intensive care, she died on 6 November, 55 hours after being admitted.
- Dr Elizabeth Garthwaite, the chief medical officer at Leeds teaching hospitals NHS trust, expressed deep sorrow for the failure to provide adequate care and offered condolences to the family.
- The inquest recommended that lessons be learned to improve patient safety and prevent similar tragedies.
