The UK is deploying RAF Typhoon jets to defend Saudi Arabia from escalating missile and drone attacks by Houthi forces. The operation, authorized by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, aims to protect Saudi cities and infrastructure, focusing on a defensive role.
What happened
- The United Kingdom will deploy RAF Typhoon fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia from attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi group.
- Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated that the aircraft will conduct defensive counter-air operations over Saudi Arabia, protecting cities, civilian populations, and critical national infrastructure.
- This follows a series of Houthi attacks, including a deadly strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10th, which killed 13 people and injured 308.
- The Houthis, locked in a civil war with Yemen’s government, have been retaliating for strikes on their territory, including Sanaa, and seizing control of the Bab al Mandab strait.
- Earlier this week, a Houthi missile strike on a Yemeni government training camp in Shabwa resulted in 73 deaths.
- The UK’s intervention, described by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting as responding to the "outrageous Houthi escalation", aims to "create the conditions for a political resolution to the conflict" and "prevent international shipping from being threatened or held to ransom."
- The operation is supported by an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft, and Royal United Services Institute thinktank expert, HA Hellyer, noted the potential for the UK to become further involved in the conflict, questioning the definition of "defensive" operations.
