Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case in Abuja after a woman arrived from Uganda. This follows recent cases in Kenya and ongoing concerns about the virus spreading across the continent, with heightened surveillance and contact tracing efforts underway.
What happened
- Nigeria’s Health Ministry confirmed a woman who recently traveled from Uganda tested positive for Ebola in Abuja on October 11th.
- The woman began exhibiting symptoms on October 7th and was admitted to a private hospital.
- Health Minister Muhammad Pate stated that authorities were tracing 44 contacts.
- Simultaneously, Kenya confirmed its ninth case of Ebola, a 24-year-old man already in quarantine, linked to the initial Kenyan patient.
- Patrick Amoth, Kenya’s Health Ministry director-general, reported that eight patients were stable and 134 contacts were quarantined.
- The cases are linked to a cluster originating from the initial patient who arrived in Kenya from the Democratic Republic of Congo via Uganda and died in Nairobi on October 5th.
- Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control had previously increased surveillance following the detection of Ebola in Kenya, focusing on early detection, isolation, and contact tracing.
- The Nigerian government established an Ebola task force in June to prevent a repeat of previous responses.
