A former Rwandan soldier, Robert Kabera, was found decapitated near Kampala, Uganda. Ugandan police are investigating the murder, which follows a pattern of alleged assassinations by Rwandan authorities targeting political opponents.
What happened
- Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan sergeant who had lived in Uganda for several years, was found dead near Kampala, Uganda, on October 16th or 17th.
- Ugandan police reported the discovery of his body, with his head missing, in Luwala, a village south of Kampala.
- According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the investigation is ongoing.
- Robert Kabera had grown increasingly critical of Rwandan President Paul Kagame following his departure from the military.
- He maintained a YouTube channel, “Major Robert TV,” with 144,000 subscribers, where he expressed support for opposition figure Victoire Ingabire, who has been repeatedly imprisoned in Rwanda.
- Kabera’s brother, Victor Agaba, stated that the family believes the killing was a result of a criminal case fabricated by the Rwandan army.
- Rwandan authorities have been accused of assassinating political opponents of President Kagame, following the 1994 genocide in Rwanda which resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 people, primarily from the Tutsi community.
- In 2021, another exiled Rwandan army lieutenant, Revocat Karemangingo, was killed in Mozambique, and in 2014, Patrick Karegeya, a former Rwandan intelligence chief who had become a critic, was found strangled in South Africa.
