Following reports of threatening emails, hundreds of schools across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Hungary, and Serbia were evacuated as authorities investigated the incidents, treating them primarily as hoaxes.
What happened
- On Monday, October 19, numerous schools received threatening emails across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Hungary, and Serbia.
- The emails, signed with ‘Allah Akbar’, reportedly contained generalized threats regarding the introduction of Sharia law and the presence of viable devices within school settings.
- Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Police Scotland received reports of these emails and initiated investigations, treating them as a hoax while liaising with the affected schools.
- Up to 300 schools in Northern Ireland received the same email, which also reached some schools in the UK.
- St Colman’s Primary School Lambeg in Lisburn issued a warning, requesting immediate parental collection of students.
- The Education Authority (EA) confirmed awareness of the email and stated it was engaging closely with the PSNI and would act on their advice.
- The Minister for Education, Paul Givan, expressed disappointment at the disruption caused by the closures, emphasizing that the incidents were not considered a viable threat but acknowledged the significant alarm they generated.
- Authorities advised schools to contact local policing district commands unless a specific object was identified.
