Source reports published 19 Oct 2026, 10:00 am – 9:41 pm AEST

Due to funding shortages, the UN World Food Programme is reducing food assistance for 500,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Rations are being cut, hot meals are being reduced, and cash assistance is being limited.

What happened

• The World Food Programme (WFP) is reducing its food assistance programs in Gaza due to significant funding shortages.
• An estimated 500,000 Palestinians will lose access to food aid, with rations cut by half and hot meals reduced from daily to every other day.
• The WFP’s acting executive director, Carl Skau, expressed concern about the impact on hunger and stability, stating that cuts are occurring as winter approaches.
• Families reliant on community kitchens, such as Fatima Mohamed and Sawsan Bahloul, will see their access to meals significantly reduced.
• The WFP is transferring aid primarily through e-wallets due to limited cash circulation in Gaza.
• Khaled, a Gaza resident, highlighted his family’s dependence on WFP assistance.
• The WFP urgently requires $450 million to maintain operations, but has seen funding reduced by half since July.
• Despite a ceasefire agreement, humanitarian conditions remain dire, with no reconstruction and limited recovery, according to Skau.
• The Palestine director for the WFP, Shaun Hughes, confirmed the cuts were due to finances, not reduced needs, and the agency needs to maintain critical operations.
