A UN report and subsequent findings assert that Israel has continued to commit acts of genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza since the October 2023 ceasefire, alongside ongoing violations in the West Bank.
What happened
- The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry found that Israel continued to commit genocide in Gaza despite a truce in place, as it did in September 2023.
- The commission, chaired by 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay, also identified Israeli forces as having committed crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including extermination, persecution, torture, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.
- Since October 7, 2023, the commission documented 254 Palestinian deaths from air strikes in the West Bank, a significant increase compared to the six deaths recorded from 2008 until the attacks.
- The report highlighted "sustained settler violence" in the West Bank as part of Israel's "widespread and systemic attack" against Palestinians.
- Furthermore, the commission found evidence of deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian children in Gaza and the West Bank, and accused Israeli forces of using sexual violence to displace Palestinian people.
- The report also noted the displacement of over 3,000 people in Hebron due to an Israeli military operation following the deaths of two soldiers, and the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967, with more than 34,000 displaced as of August.
